第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分) A bargain is something offered at a low and advantageous price. A more recent definition is: a bargain is a dirty trick to force money out of the pockets of silly and innocent people.
The cost of producing a new—for example—toothpaste would make 80 p the proper price for it, so we will market it at £ 1. 20. It is not a bad toothpaste, and as people like to try new things it will sell well to start with; but the attraction of novelty soon fades, so sales will fall. When that happens we will reduce the price to £ l. 15. And we will turn it into a bargain by printing 5 p OFF all over it.
Sometimes it is not 5 p OFF but l p OFF. What breathtaking rudeness to advertise l p OFF your soap or washing powder or whatever! Even the poorest old-age pensioner ought to regard this as an insult(侮辱), but he doesn’t. A bargain must not be missed. People say one has to have washing powderand one might as well buy it a (or whatever)penny cheaper.
The real danger starts when unnecessary things become “bargains”. Many people just cannot resist bargains. Provided they think they are getting a bargain they will buy clothes they will never wear or furniture they have no space for. Once I heard of a man who bought an electric saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day. But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.
Quite a few people actually believe that they make money on such bargains. A lady once told me: “I’ve had a lucky day today. I bought a dress for £120, reduced from £400; and I bought a beautiful Persian carpet for £600, reduced from £900.” It will never occur to her that she has actually wasted £720. She feels as though she had made £ 580. She also feels, I am sure, that if she had more time for shopping, she could make a living out of it.
Some people buy in large quantities because it is cheaper. Once a couple bought enough sugar for their lifetime and the lifetime of their children and grandchildren. They thought it a bargain not to be missed. When the sugar arrived they didn’t know where to store it —until they realized that their toilet was a very spacious one. So that was where they piled up their sugar. Not only did their guests feel rather strange whenever they were offered sugar to put into their coffee, but the toilet became extremely sticky.
To offer bargains is a commercial trick to make the poor poorer. When greedy fools fall for this trick, it serves them right.

3、How does the author feel about l p OFF a product? A.It’s a gift for poor people. C.It’s a bargain worth trying.
B.It’s an offense to shoppers. D.It’s a real reduction in price.
4、Which statement will the author probably agree with? A.Bargains are things people don’t really need. B.Bargains are often real cheap products. C.Bargains help people make a living. D.Bargains play tricks on people.
22.(8分)Amazon China, one of the largest online booksellers, unveiled the bestselling books in China for the first hall of 2017 on Tuesday, disclosing Chinese people’s reading habits.
Japanese author KeigoHigashino’s Miracles of the Namiya General Store topped the list of the most popular paper books, followed by late Chinese writer Yang Jiang’s We Three and Israeli historian Yuval Noah’s Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow. In the list of paid eBooks on Kindle, the top three places were taken by Chinese writer Zhou Meisen’s In the Name of the People, KeigoHigashino’s Miracles of the Namiya General Store and Fall of Giants—book one of British author Ken Follett’s historical
Century Trilogy.
Amazon has also released a ranking of Chinese cities where people read most. Hefei and Zhengzhou occupy the first and second spot respectively for the second straight year. A new technology is going to ripe, one that could transform our daily lives, 23.(8分)help to form new industries, even remove world economic powers from their present positions. Unlike the wave of industrialization that began in the West and spread later to the rest of the world, the new developments are taking place in research labs all over the globe—and Asians are in the forefront. Physicists are creating a new class of materials that display an amazing property unforeseen even two years ago—superconductivity (超导体技术).
Used today only in specialized equipment, super conductors have the potential to radically change most of the electrical and electronic appliances found in the home, making them smaller, more powerful and efficient. They could free our cities of pollution by replacing petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles with electric cars, and cut the cost of electricity. The new materials do something that even the best of conductors such as copper and silver cannot—they do away with all electrical resistance. The significances for energy storage are great.
The technology is in its early stage, still accessible to countries that decide to invest brains and money. For 75 years it had remained little more than a scientific curiosity with limited practical use because the phenomenon occurred only at extremely low temperatures. It was first observed in 1911 by a Dutch scientist named Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, who cooled mercury (水银) to temperatures below -269℃ with liquid helium (氦). Then in January last year, two IBM scientists, K. Alex Muller and J. George Bednorz, found a metal oxide ceramic (氧化陶瓷) that superconducted at -243℃. Their report went largely unnoticed until last December, when it was confirmed at a scientific meeting in Boston. Today Japan, India, China and other Asian countries all have their share of experts who spend their days and nights in labs, acting as midwives (助产士) to a new technology.
1、As is indicated in the passage, the technology of superconductivity ____________. A.has already been developed B.is still under development
C.will be used only in specialized equipment D.will be used in daily lives in a few years
2、The new technology differs from the others in that ____________. A.it began in the East and spread later to the rest of the world B.it began in the West and spread later to the rest of the world C.it is being cultivated in research labs around the world D.it is accessible to physicists who are intelligent and rich 3、From the passage, we may conclude that ____________.
A.Asian scientists gain the lead in the growth of the new technology B.Dutch scientists kept reporting new findings for the last 75 years C.IBM scientists' report receive immediate attention all over the world D.the West was astonished at the new technology developed by the Asians 4、Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.The Prospect of a New Technology B.Superconductivity: A New Technology
C.A New Technology: The Key to Change the Way of Our Lives D.A New Technology: A Joint Effort of Many Countries
24.(8分) Corals (珊瑚) are often described as undersea forests, but they are declining far more quickly than the Amazon. The coral reefs (礁) are likely to be among the first ecosystems to be wiped out by climate change.
A temperature rise of just 1 to 2℃ can lead to the death of the algae (海藻) upon which corals depend, draining them of color and making the structure more fragile. These bleaching (脱色) events can be temporary if waters cool, but the more frequent they are and the longer they last, the greater the risk of damage is. But that’s exactly what is happening. Bleaching was first observed in 1983. It was seen on a global level in 1998, then 2010, and then from 2015 to 2017. Most available scientific evidence tells us that unless we do something to limit warming to 1.5℃, we will lose 99% of the world’s coral reefs in coming decades.
But there are other threats beyond warming. Off the Philippine island of Palawan, its old reefs have been badly damaged by dirty water from the tourist holiday center, pollution from boats and overfishing. The area ought to be a shelter because it’s one of the ocean regions most bearable to climate change. “Even here, we are losing our corals,” said David Obura, chair of the Global Specialist Group in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. “We need to reduce stress from overfishing,
coastal development, pollution and tourism.”
“I’m a generation of scientists watching them disappear. It’s very depressing,” Obura said. “Above 1.5℃, in about 50 years, they will be a treasure of historic movies and pictures, but very little to see in real life. Children born today may be the last generation to see coral reefs in all their glory.” 1、How does the rising temperature affect corals? A.By damaging the algae. B.By darkening their color. C.By cutting their food resources
D.By changing their structures temporarily. 2、What happened after 2015 according to the text? A.Bleaching first became a global issue. B.The ocean’s temperature went up steadily. C.We lost 99% of the world’s coral reefs. D.World-wide coral bleaching lasted longer.
3、What factor that threatens corals is stressed in Paragraph 3? A.Illegal fishing. C.Ocean pollution.
4、What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Philippine’s coral reefs are under threat. B.Experts’ great concern on global warming. C.Record our undersea forests before it is too late
D.The next generation may never see the beauty of coral reefs
25.(10分)For many foreigners who have visited or worked in China, one of their strong impressions is that the country is very safe. Here , you can go out alone late at night to eat at a food stand without feeling nervous. You can also let your younger children ride public transport all by themselves without worrying about their safety.
This year, 2018 , marks 8 special anniversary of the launching of the reform and opening up policy, which took place two score years ago in China. Over the past few decades, the country has achieved fast economic growth, while social peace and stability have been maintained(维护) to the fullest extent at the lowest cost. Of course, there are still unsolved problems. However, from the overall aspect, Chinese society remains
B.Climate change. D.Global warming.
harmonious and safe. In my eyes , this should be attributed(归于) largely to the cultural ;economic and political environment of the country.
A society can be stable and orderly only when its people can lead a prosperous(繁荣的) life. After the introduction of the reform and opening up policy, China achieved fast economic growth and significant scientific and technological progress. In the meantime, the Chinese government has taken various measures such 2s those to fight corruption, reduce poverty and promote the rule of law, in order to uphold social equity. Thanks to these efforts, the potential factors that might cause social problems have been greatly reduced.
Apart from government departments including the police and judicial(司法的) departments , the general public also contributes much to social governance. The development of information technology has created new ways of linking the police and the public. By jointly fighting crimes in such ways, the public and the police have developed an ever-increasing level of mutual trust and positive interaction.
The safety and stability in China did not come easily. Rather; it should be attributed to the efforts made by 1.3 ‘billion people. For both Chinese and foreigners living in the country, the sense of safety and security is very precious. 1、The main idea of the passage is that . A.China has achieved fast economic growth and people are becoming rich B.the Chinese government has taken various measures to fight social problems C.the police and judicial departments work more effectively to maintain social stability D.various factors contribute to the stability and safety of present China 2、In which year was the reform and opening up policy launched in China? A.In 1968. B.In 1978. C.In 1988. D.In 2008.
3、Which of the following can be concluded according to the passage? A.Most foreigners lack a sense of safety when staying in China.
B.Government departments rather than the general public play an important role in keeping social peace and stability.
C.People’s prosperous life in a country can lead to a stable and orderly society.
D.Four basic reasons are listed throughout the passage for China’s stability and safety. 4、What is the tone of the text? A.Negative. B.Positive. C.Humorous. D.Doubtful.

29、Dear Kevin,
Glad to receive your email. You asked me to recommend some Chinese traditional gifts that you will buy for your family and friends. Here I’d like to make some recommendations. The first one is the Chinese knot, which stands for friendship, love and good luck. The second one is the Chinese paper cutting, for it is a world cultural heritage. Paper-cuts vary in form and style and they are attractive. Chinese silk is one of the most popular handcrafts representing China so I think the silk scarf is a very good choice for you. In addition, it is convenient to take along. Hoping my suggestions can help you.
Have a good vacation!
Yours,
Li Hua
