How the Foolish Old Man Removes the Mountains

愚公移山

In old times there lived a foolish old man in the north of the mountains. Two great mountains, Taihang and Wangwu, blocked his way to the south. When he went out to the outside world, he had to go to a long way around the mountains. It was so inconvenient for the family.

很久以前，北山住着一位愚公。太行、王屋这两座大山挡住了他家向南的通路。他出来进去都要绕道，很不方便。

So the foolish old man summoned the whole family and said, “I have an idea to improve our living environment---to remove these two mountains away so that we can straight to Yuzhou.”

于是他就召集全家人商量说：“我有个办法可以改善我们生活的环境，大家一起来挖平这两座险峻的大山，这样道路就可一直通到豫州。”

All the family folks agreed to his idea and they began to work the next day—to dig up the earth, break the rocks and carry them to Bo Hai. The old man’s neighbor, a widow and her seven-year-old son also came to their aid.

大家听后纷纷表示赞同，第二天立马行动起来，凿石掘土，用箕 运到渤海边上。邻居的寡妇有个儿子，刚七八岁，也蹦蹦跳跳地来帮助他。

At the river bend lived a wise old man. When he heard about this, he came to persuade the foolish old man, saying, “The mountains are so high, and you are too old. How can you remove the mountains away in your life-time?”

河湾上住着一个聪明的老头叫智叟，跑来阻止他干这件事，说：“山这么高，而你都这么老了，凭你余留的岁月和剩下的力气就能把大山移走吗？”

The foolish old man replied, “When I die, my sons will continue the work, and then my grandsons and their grandsons. The mountains would not grow any more, why can’t we remove them in the end?” The wise old man had no word to say.

北山愚公回答说：“即使我死了，还有儿子在呀；儿子又生孙子，孙子又生儿子；子子孙孙无穷无尽，山却不会增高加大，为什么移不走呢？”河曲智叟无话可答。

The Heaven God heard about the old man’s story and was moved by his determination. He sent two gods to carry the two mountains away. Nowadays there were no more mountains between Jizhou and the Han River.

天帝被愚公的诚心所感动，命令大力神夸娥氏的两个儿子背走了那两座山。从那时开始，冀州的南部直到汗水南岸，再也没有高山阻隔了。
