The following is a true story about a young friend of mine who lives in St. Louis. Andy was born with a developmental disease. The two sides of his brain were not joined normally, so that the right side of his body could not exchange information with the left. At the age of three, it was difficult for him to walk, speak, and play. He could only say a few words, and walk slowly with someone helping him. He attended a center where he tried every imaginable treatment, struggling, sometimes in tears, to get stronger. Andy hated it when his parents would leave him there in the mornings. However, they believed that he could grow up to live a normal healthy life. They believed it for themselves, and for Andy.
It paid off. Today Andy is a successful 13-year-old high- school student. His progress has been huge. He receives special help with a few things, but can join his friends in all the activities he loves. Andy has overcome many difficulties in moving from adversity (逆境) to victory (成功).
\"Overnight success\" is the result of years of strong will and continued learning. Victory is possible for those who consider it as their strongest need. They’ll find the path to their dream. However, they should accept adversities as ordinary things that will develop strength, growth, and skills to attract the victory. 21. Which of the following can be used to describe Andy? A. As a manager in my former company, I had soon realized that it was important for me to develop certain skills. One of these had to do with body language. Let me compare body language in India with that in North America.
In the southern part of India, a woman manager will never extend her hand when you greet her. She just says hello or good morning, and never allows any kind of body contact with a man. But in the western part of India, a woman manager will warmly extend her hand. In North America, too, a woman manager will happily shake hands, and it’s important to shake firmly.
In Indian culture, the boss is always called \"Sir\and superiors (上级) and old people are always called \"Mr.\" Eye contact with the boss is considered very rude. Avoiding eye contact with the old is considered a sign of respect. But in North American culture, eye contact is very important. Avoiding eye contact is considered as doubt. North American bosses are so informal that they love to be called by their first names. However ,I had a hard time calling my boss by his first name. It took me two months to get used to it. I also found it very funny when I learnt that calling somebody
Andy
is
one
of
his
or
her
friends
\"Mr. [First Name]\"is considered rude in North America.
24. The underlined word \"extend\" in the third paragraph probably means \"______\". A. reach out B. take back C. put up D. give away
25. Which of the following is considered polite in southern India? A. Calling a boss by his first name. B. Shaking hands with a woman. C. Kissing a woman manager.
D. Greeting a woman with words only.
26. We can learn from the passage that ______. A. the author is likely from North America
B. people in western India shake hands when greeting each other
C. avoiding looking into someone’s eyes is considered as doubt in India D. you will be considered polite if you call a North American \"Sir\" 27. In the passage the author mainly tells us ______. A. how to use body language
B. How many important body languages C. that body language changes with culture D. about body language only in India C
How many times have you laughed today? Have you ever wondered what makes you laugh? In the whole animal world, only we humans can laugh. On average, we laugh about 17 times a day.
Laughter is a natural reaction of the body to something funny or pleasant. Have you noticed that when you laugh, many parts of your body respond (反响)? Your face expression changes , your breathing changes, and muscles throughout your body are affected.
An interesting story dates back to 1962. In a school in Tanganyika, in Africa, a group of schoolgirls started laughing uncontrollably over a joke. This laughter became epidemic (传染的), jumping from one person to the next, spreading across communities, and lasting for six months! So strong was the \"laughter epidemic\" that
schools had to shut down till it ended.
How we laugh remains a unknown. Whatever the reasons, laughter, as the saying goes, \"is the best medicine.\" In fact, science has proven that being happy and laughing can not only keep us healthy and fit but also help deal with serious illnesses. Laughing exercises all the important muscles, and keeps you fit. People have started forming laughter clubs that use laughter to treat illnesses. They meet at specific places at fixed times and laugh together. Laughter spreads, so this exercise works best in groups; once one person starts laughing, others automatically (自动地) join in.
28.According to the text, laughter is ______to people’s health. A. harmful B. useless C. good D. terrible 29. People have formed laughter clubs to ______.
A. kill time B. relax C. meet others D.treat illnesses 30. The best title for the passage would be ______. A. A Laughter Epidemic
B. What Laughter Is and What Laughter Can Do C. The Relationship Between Laughter and Health D. How Laughter Helps Cure Disease
31. The passage is probably taken from a(n) ______. A. advertisement B. novel C. magazine D. story book D
Alarmed by how many cigarette butts (烟头) are thrown away in the parks of Amsterdam, two Dutch designers, Ruben van der Vleuten and Bob Spikman, came up with an unusual plan to train crows ( 乌鸦) to pick up the cigarette butts and trade them for tasty rewards.
“What we want most is that the crows associate food with butts,〞 van der Vleuten said. To achieve this, they plan to follow a four-step process. The first step presents the crow with a cigarette butt and a treat on a tray (托盘) in a machine called Crow Box. This helps the bird associate the butt with the food so that it will come back for more.
In the second step, they take away the food and only drop it when the crow arrives at the Crow Box, which helps it learn that the machine really works. During the third step, the crow learns that the Crow Box responds to certain actions. They take away the food completely, leaving only the cigarette butt on the tray. The crow, used to the food always being there, will start pecking (啄食) around for it and eventually push the butt into the machine’s container, causing the food to drop.
In the fourth step, when the crow is comfortable with the third step, a person puts some butts around the machine. Now the crow has to find out it can pick up those butts and put them into the machine. Once they get used to how things work, the crows will start looking for cigarette butts in the wild and trade them for tasty treats at the Crow Box machine.
Spikman and van der Vleuten are currently doing experiments to see how long it takes to train wild crows to pick up cigarette butts for food. They say that their project will start a conversation about the environmental problems caused by cigarette butts around the world. Data shows that out of the six trillion 〔万亿〕 cigarettes we smoke every year, about two thirds end up in the environment. 32. What is important in training the crows? A. Finding enough crows in the city. B. 5
C. Helping crows know food has something to do with butts. D. Inventing a smart machine that can train crows.
33 Which step helps crows to learn that the machine is working?
A. The first step. B. The second step. C. The third step. D. The fourth step.
34 We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.
A. about six trillion cigarettes end up in the environment every year B. cigarette butts are very bad for the world’s environment C. the designers will work totally on environmental problems next D. the designers already know how long it will take to train wild crows

35. The purpose of the text is to ______. A. tell readers how to train a crow effectively

W: Do you have any plans for the weekend, John? Would you like to play badminton with me?
M: Well, I’d like to, but the final exam is coming, so I’m going to have to study. Text 2
M: Jane, you are a doctor. How about your brother and sister?
W: My brother is a customs official, but he used to be a teacher. And my sister has the same job as I do. Text 3
M: I like swimming but not skiing. What about you, Rose?
W: Skating and table tennis used to be my favorite sports, you know, but recently I’ve really gotten into baseball. Text 4
M: It’s rather cold and dry, isn’t it? What’s the climate like in your country in winter?
W: It’s warmer, but wet. I like autumn. It’s cool and sunny, very pleasant. Text 5
W: Oh, my God! Look at this! M: What’s the matter, darling?
W: Look at the mess, Mike. Our son just throws his things here and there and never tidies up his room. Text 6
W: I’m sorry, Sam. I don’t want to go to the concert. M: How about the cinema? Or we could watch a football game.
W: I don’t like movies and I have no interest in sports. I like to be outside. M: But we went climbing last Sunday. Oh, do you want to go to an art exhibition? There
is one at the Xing Hai Exhibition Hall on Saturday. W: That’s a good idea.
M: I’ll pick you up at 9 am tomorrow, OK?
W: I want to sleep longer. Let’s make it an hour later. M: Sure. It’s up to you. Text 7
M: Hi, Lily! Are you ready for your big business trip to Chicago? W: Oh, yes! I will do a good job.
M: I’m sure you will. Hey, I remember that you have relatives in America, right? Any chance you’ll get to see them?
W: I’d like to, but they’re not in Chicago. My uncle moved to Los Angeles five years ago. I was thinking about visiting him but I don’t have a lot of time. Maybe I could just take a bullet train from Chicago.
M: That’s not going to be possible. America doesn’t have any bullet trains. The fastest train we have is called the Amtrak Acela Express. Sometimes the Amtrak train can reach speeds up to over 240 kilometers per hour, but most of the time it runs at only around 130.
W: Wow! I thought America was more advanced than that. We have trains that can easily reach 300 kilometers an hour! Text 8

W: My dear, it is our wedding anniversary! We’ve been together for 20 years. M: Yeah. Do you know that this restaurant used to be the teahouse where we met? W: Oh, really? It looks so different. Our “old place〞 has turned into a brand new bar.
M: Do you remember our first date? I bought you five candies, but I was so anxious
that I forgot to give them to you. And they melted while I was holding them. W: Yeah, that was unforgettable. And I have to thank you for making me happy all these years.
M: OK, enough. This is for you. Like it?
W: Oh, a gold necklace! So beautiful. Thank you so much, honey. Text 9
M: Back at my old job there were some days where I barely used my brain at all! I just did the same thing over and over again. W: So that’s why you started your own company.
M: Yes! I always had an interest in gardening, so I thought to myself: there must be a lot of people who would like to have a garden but don’t have the time to set one up.
W: So now you go around making custom-designed gardens for homes and offices, right? M: Yes!
W: That’s cool. And it does offer me some hope. I guess I need to do some thinking about what I really want to do.
M: I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. I spent almost one year doing various small jobs and trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Not having a stable income can be difficult.
W: Yes. Right now I have some savings, so I’ll be good for about six months. M: Do you have a “dream〞 or something you’ve always wanted to do? W: Well, I have always had the idea of opening a bicycle store. M: Interesting! Cycling is quite a trend these days. Text 10
