Unit 5 Why do you like pandas?

The teaching plan of Section A 1a-2c

Teaching materials

1. Status and functions

This lesson is from Go for it Grade Seven Book Two Unit Five. The topic of this unit is about animals. Students will easily get interested in this topic. The lesson belongs to the first section and students will learn to describe different animals and to express preferences by using sentence structures “Why-Because” “where are...from? They’re from...”and new description words. They can know more about animals and understand the importance of protecting wild animals and the earth.

2. Teaching objectives

According to the requirements of English New Curriculum Standard in junior high school, three kinds of objectives are set in this lesson. 1) Knowledge objectives:

 Key Vocabulary: tiger, panda, koala, lazy, scary, smart, kind of, Australia, South

Africa

 Target Language:

- Why do you like pandas? - Because they are kind of interesting. - Where are lions from? -They are from South Africa. 2) Ability objectives:

 To develop Ss’ abilities of listening and speaking

 Be able to talk about their preferences by using the target language 3) Moral objectives:

 To cultivate Ss’ awareness of protecting animals and our earth  Encourage Ss to take care of animals and love them..

3. Teaching Important Points and Difficult Points

1) Teaching important points:

 To grasp the key vocabulary and target language.

 To learn to describe animals and talk about their preferences.

2) Teaching difficult points:

 To know clearly about the usage of plural nouns and the third person singular.

 Students in Grade Seven

Students in Grade Seven are active, passionate and they are ready to show themselves at any time. But the vocabulary and target language are limited for some students. They aren’t at the same level in language learning. So, the teacher should encourage students to work in pairs or groups.

 Teaching and learning methods

Task-based, situational and audio-visual teaching methods; Situational learning methods; Work in pairs and groups. Teaching aids: multi-media, PPT.

 Teaching procedures

Ⅰ. Lead in (3 minutes) 1. Play a video about Kung Fu panda.

2. Ask Ss questions and have them to recall the animals they had learned. T: What can you see in the video? What other animals do you know?

(Purpose: to arouse students’ interest by playing the English video and to bring students into a situation which naturally lead to the topic.) Ⅱ. Presentation(12 minutes)

(Build up a situation and show THREE TASKs to Ss who will be divided into 2 groups) 1. Learn the new words

Task 1 Guess the animals on the map according to the sound or other traits.

Task 2 Challenge memory. Ask Ss to recall each animal on the map of Nanchang Zoo. 2. Finish 1a.

Match the words with the animals in the pictures. And then check the answers. 3. Listening 1b.

Task 3 Tell Ss to listen and find out what animals the children want to see first. (Purpose: Going to the Nanchang Zoo is a real situation. Task-based teaching method is arranged here to help Ss to grasp the new animal words and can consolidate Ss’

inputting and guides them to talking.) Ⅲ. Talk and pair work(10 minutes)

1. Ask some questions and find more description words about animals. T: Do you like pandas? Why do you like them? Because they’re cute.

2. Learn some adjectives about animals.(cute ,smart ,fun ,beautiful, friendly, scary, lazy...)

3. Work in pairs. Ss work with their partners to practice the conversation on PPT. (Purpose: Ss will connect the learnt words to the new words to describe the animals they like or dislike. The ability of speaking will be improved in this step.) Ⅳ. Listen and consolidate(8 minutes) 1. Brainstorm about the animals and countries.

T: Are lions from China? Where are they from? They’re from South Africa Where are pandas from? Where are koalas from?

2. Listen to 2a.Ss listen and try to answer and then check the answers. 3. Listen again and finish 2b and read it.

4. Show the transcription and ask Ss to practice the whole conversations.

(Purpose: In this step, Ss learn more about animals, which gives them more information to talk about animals they prefer. All the target language will be consolidated. ) Ⅴ. Exercise (8 minutes)

1. Translate some sentences into English with all students.

2. Bomb Game. Ask students to pick the animal and answer different kinds of question. (Purpose: It’s a good way to review the language points through exercise. The varieties of exercise such as task or game can add the interest and enrich Ss’ knowledge. ) Ⅵ. Summary(3 minutes)

1.Summarize the target knowledge through a mind map. 2.Look at a photo and go on a moral education.

(Purpose: A good lesson can help Ss digest the knowledge in class instead of after class. Summarizing in time helps Ss to examine if they learn well.) Ⅶ. Homework(1 minute) Oral: 1. Recite the new words.

2. Practice the conversations with your classmates.

Written: write a conversation between you and your family about animals. (Purpose: Homework is an examination of learning effects and also a way to consolidate what Ss have learned in class. )
