THE 'China Daily', a newspaper, reports that the average student goes to sleep at 00:30 am. Even if that's an exaggeration (夸张), it's too close to the truth. Scientists say teens should sleep nine hours each night. But that's hard to do.
Some even \"pull all-nighters\". These are lazy students who have homework due (到期) the next day that they haven't done. In the morning they don't look healthy and you can tell who's been doing it.
One reporter did a survey on the problem. She found that most kids pull all-nighters to finish homework, but some do it for other reasons, such as playing computer games!
Maybe the students’ lack (缺乏) of sleep is because of laziness - But in fact, few of them are lazy- or maybe it's because they have too much to do in middle schools.
Zhang Jialiang, a student in a middle school, usually go to bed around midnight. He says, “If I stayed up past 00:30 am, I wouldn't get any work done. I'd be falling asleep at my desk. My classes begin at 6:50 am. I'm partly awake in my first class. By the second, I'm slightly drowsy(困倦的). By my third class, I'm sleepy. By midday I'm finally wide-awake. But by 3:00 pm, I'm slowing down again. Yet I get more sleep than the China Daily's 'average student'.” Most Chinese middle schools seem to have a similar problem with sleepy students. Middle school classes start at 6:50 am, so students have to wake up one and a half hours before that to get ready and catch the bus. It's believed that lack of sleep can damage (损害) both grades and health.
Some schools are paying attention. Classes in those schools start at 7:30 am. ( ) 56. What's the problem talked about in the passage?
A. Many kids have too much homework to do.
B. Many teenagers don't have enough sleep.
C. Many children are crazy about playing computer games. D. Many kids are too lazy to finish their homework on time.

A. is quite true

B. Homework.
C. Housework.
D. Computer games.
( ) 59. What's the solution(解决办法) suggested at the end of the passage?
A. Later start of classes. C. Going to bed early.
B. Less homework. D. Eating healthy food.
( ) 60.What’s Chinese meaning of the phrase \"pull all-nighters\" in the reading?
A. 开夜车
B. 混时间
C.太懒惰 D.熬通宵

Bamboo is one of nature’s most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass.
Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist reported one bamboo plant which grew 1.5 metres (4 feet) in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are more than 1,000 kinds of bamboo.
Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimetres (1 foot) across. This plant also comes in different colours, from yellow to black to green.
Bamboo has been used to make many things such as kitchen tools. Because it is strong, bamboo is also used to build buildings.
Many Asian countries have used bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for buildings and supporting new buildings and bridges while they are being built.
In Africa, poor farmers are taught how to find water using bamboo. These African countries need cheap way to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. Bamboo pipes (管子) help poor farmers bring water to their thirsty fields without spending a lot of money.

The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle .
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired(雇佣) Schultz as the company’s head of marketing(营销) .
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The unique atmosphere (氛围) of the espresso(浓咖啡) bars there caught his eye. To Schultz it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places: home, work, and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.
Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Between 1987and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new stores—and that was only the beginning. As a matter of fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day!
Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gains an understanding of customers in the city. This understanding helps Starbucks open stores in the right locations for their customers.
