As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fearswere very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my ownroom at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing
car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of awild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains(窗帘) seem to
move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem ahundred times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the \"enemy(敌人) \"would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially onthe way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right nearmy home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buseswere lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong oneand be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a parkor a museum, I wouldn't let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of notbeing liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to methen, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

ASixteen years ago a boy gave me an important gift. It was a smile. It was the early autumn of my first year at a middle school, and my old school was far away. As a result, no one knew who I was. I was very lonely, and afraid to speak to anyone.

Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countriesrecently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunicationswere always possible, even over something as simple as \"yes\" and \"no\".
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks. The woman there didn't say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the Woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛),which in Micronesia means \"yes\".
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the

He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing~ He soon found out that his students did understand.
