Thirteen vehicles lined up last March to race across the Mojave Desert, seeking a million in prize money. To win, they had to finish the 142-mile race in less than 10 hours. Teams and watchers knew there might be no winner at all, because these vehicles were missing a key part—drivers.

DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, organized the race as part of a push to develop robotic vehicles for future battlefields. But the Grand Challenge, as it was called, just proved how difficult it is to get a car to speed across an unfamiliar desert without human guidance. One had its brake lock up in the starting area, Another began by throwing itself onto a wall. Another got tied up by bushes near the road after 1.9 miles.

One turned upside down. One took off in entirely the wrong direction and had to be disabled by remote (远距离的) consol. One went a little more than a mile and rushed into a fence; another managed to go for six miles but stuck on a rock. The “winner,”if there was any, reached 7.8 miles before it ran into a long, narrow hole, and the front wheels caught on fire.

“You get a lot of respect for natural abilities of the living things,” says Reinhold Behringer, who helped design two of the ear-size vehicles for a company called Sci-Autonics, “Even ants (蚂蚁) can do all these tasks effortlessly. It’s very hard for us to put these abilities into our machines.” The robotic vehicles, though with necessary modern equipment such as advanced computers and GPS guidance, had trouble figuring out fast enough the blocks ahead that a two-year-old human recognizes immediately. Sure, that very young child, who has just only learned to walk, may not think to wipe apple juice off her face, but she already knows that when there’s a cookie in the kitchen she has to climb up the table, and that when she gets to the cookie it will taste good. She is more advanced, even months old, than any machine humans have designed. 46. Watchers doubted if any of the vehicles could finish the race because ______.

A. they did not have any human guidance B. the road was not familiar to the drivers C. the distance was too long for the vehicles D. the prize money was unattractive to the drivers 47. DARPA organized the race in order to ______.

A. raise money for producing more robotic vehicles

B. push the development of vehicle industry C. train more people to drive in the desert D. improve the vehicles for future wars

48. From the passage we know “robotic vehicles” are a kind of machines that ______. A. can do effortlessly whatever tasks living things can B. can take part in a race across 142 miles with a time limit C. can show off their ability to turn themselves upside down

D. can move from place to 101ace without being driven by human beings 49. In the race, the greatest distance one robotic vehicle covered was A. about eight miles B. six miles C. almost two miles D. about one mile

50. In the last paragraph, the writer implies that there is a long way to go A. for a robotic vehicle to finish a 142-mile race without any difficulties B. for a little child who has just learned to walk to reach the cookie on the table C. for a robotic vehicle to deal with a simple problem that a little child can solve D. for a little child to understand the importance of wiping apple juice off its face 46. A 47. D 48. D 49. A 50. C

Science and Society

Young people need to understand how our society depends upon scientific and technological advancement and to realize that science is a basic part of modern living. The scientific process and the knowledge produced cannot be considered to be ends in themselves, except for the classical scientist. A student should understand the relation of basic research to applied research, and the connection between technological developments and human affairs. More of technology than science will be involved in social decisions, but both are important in public policy.

The knowledge and methods of science are of little importance if there is no inclination to use them properly . An open mind, a desire for accurate knowledge, confidence in the procedures for seeking knowledge, and the expectation that the solution of problems will come from the use of tested and proven knowledge— these are among the “scientific attitudes”.

Science instruction should acquaint students with career possibilities in technical fields and

in science teaching. A continuous effort should be made to identify and encourage those who develop special interests. They should be given opportunities for some direct experience of a professional nature; they should also learn about the extent of the various science fields and how these fields are related to each other. But it is even more important for young people to acquire those skills and abilities that will enable them to take the responsibilities for expanding their own learning.

For many years, women could only be seen on the seat behind the men operating the two-wheeled motorcycle. Now more and more women are taking the front seat. More than twenty million people in the United States ride motorcycles.

Since 1998 the number of female bikers has risen sharply. Lady Sport Riders began in 1999 in Washington. The women formed the organization to share their love of motorcycle riding. But later it wanted to be more than just an organization for women to gather and ride motorcycles, so it started to organize events that help national health organizations and women’s shelters. It also permits women to share a strong sisterhood, and gives financial awards to poor students. Like other motorcycle clubs, the members of Lady Sport Riders also help their community.

Different from male riders, female riders ride for more than fun. This sport gives women a sense of freedom and control. Female riders have helped change motorcycle culture. More than five years ago manufacturers began making equipment especially for women. Some bikes now have smaller, softer seats and controls that are easier to reach. Modern clothes for riding now look good and still provide protection. In the past, women rode motorcycles that traveled at a moderate speed. Now theirs are as powerful as the ones men ride. Safety is very important when riding because the risk of injury is high. So the women wear protective clothing and equipment at all times, especially for the head.

Lady Sport Riders believes women have earned their place in the sport of motorcycle riding. When speaking of male motorcyclists, the members of the club say, “They Made the Game. We Came to Play!”

About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But, as we can’t drink seawater, how can it be important?

Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important seawater is!

Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.

The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.

Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats. Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important seawater is! 61. Which of the following is the proper order of the food chain?

A. small animals→algae→microscopic animals→large animals→man B. algae→microscopic animals→large animals→larger animals→man C. small animals→algae→large animals→microscopic animals→man D. microscopic animals→algae→large animals →larger animals→man 62. People used to think that the rubbish thrown into the sea ________.

A. wouldn’t harm the fish in the sea B. would change the balance of the food chain C. would be broken down in the sea D. wouldn’t do much harm to the sea 63. From the passage, we learn that _________.

A. most fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas B. it is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain C. excessive fishing has caused the decrease in fish stock

D. it won’t be long before the problems concerning oceans will be solved . Which of the following is NOT a way being used to protect oceans? A. The use of international agreements. B. Forbidding fishing to protect fish stocks. C. The use of new techniques.

D. Raising people’s awareness of the need to protect oceans. 65. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. The importance of seawater. B. Life in the oceans.

C. How to protect food chains. D. How to deal with seawater pollution.

Now, we know that if we do not get enough vitamins, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. As a result, vitamin supplements(补品),though expensive, are popular with people who worry that they are not getting enough vitamins from the foods they eat. But contrary to what many people think, medical experts have found little evidence that most supplements do anything

to improve health or protect against disease.

In fact, medical experts warn that taking too many of some vitamins can be harmful. For example, too much vitamin E can cause bleeding. People should discuss what vitamins they take with their doctors, as some vitamins can produce harmful side effects when mixed with medicines. Experts, however, do say that sometimes vitamins can help prevent disease. People who know they lack a particular vitamin should take vitamin supplements. Some older adults, for example, may not have enough vitamin B-twelve. This is because, as people get older, their body loses its ability to take it from foods. Also, people who spend much time inside may need some extra vitamin D as the skin makes this vitamin from sunlight.

Different vitamins are found in different foods. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It also is in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A. Vitamin B-twelve is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like fruits. Vitamin K can be found in pork products.

In fact, for most people, a balanced diet can ensure enough of the vitamins our bodies need. So, it is important for us to eat a mixture of foods every day to ensure that we get enough vitamins our bodies need.

71. What is probably talked about before this passage? A. How many vitamins a person’s body needs. B. How many vitamins some foods contain. C. The benefits that vitamins bring to our health. D. What people should do to stay healthy.

72. Vitamin supplements are popular with people because ________. A. people mistakenly think that they are good for their health B. they contain more vitamins than the foods people eat C. food does not provide enough vitamins people need D. people fear that a lack of vitamins will lead to disease

73. From the passage, we can learn that medical experts advise people _________. A. never to take any vitamin supplements B. to depend only on food for their vitamins

C. not to take any vitamins together with medicines D. to consult doctors before taking vitamin supplements

74. For people who lack Vitamin B-twelve, they can eat more from _______. A. sweet potatoes B. pork products C. green leafy vegetables D. eggs 75. What would be the best title of the passage? A. Getting enough vitamins through a balanced diet. B. Vitamin supplements do harm to our health. C. Vitamins are important to our health.

D. Lacking vitamins can cause many diseases.

Dear Anne,

I like your column very much. I met a girl four years ago at a gym. She was the one who originally approached me and we became good friends. Then one day, she made me really angry,

so angry that I just left and we never saw each other again.

Looking back, I really regret ending things that way. It was a cowardly act on my part, but I had a terrible temper at that time and let the smallest thing get to me. Recently, I’ve started thinking about her again and I looked up her e-mail address. I thought about writing to say “Hi” and apologize for what I did but I’m not sure. She could still be angry with me, or maybe she has forgotten me. I feel very lonely and I want to see her again. What should I do? Tom

Dear Tom,

She may still be angry with you, and she may have forgotten the friendship between you, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve an apology. Tom, how many of us have wished for the day that someone who treated us badly saw the light and finally owned up? But we rarely get that kind of expected result. So sure, e-mail her and say “Hi”.

Tell her you have been thinking about her and just want to apologize for getting angry and being a coward by walking out on her. But you should remember if she thinks you’re apologizing just because you are lonely, she might dismiss your sincerity. Therefore, don’t mention that. If she wants to see you again, she’ll make sure that happens.

Even if she doesn’t want to be your friend, I can assure you, she’ll appreciate the gesture. And it might make you think twice next time you get angry.

Anne 56. In the letter, Anne is probably ___________.

A. Tom’s friend B. Tom’s teacher C. a woman reporter D. a columnist 57. What is troubling Tom?

A. He can’t get in touch with his former friend. B. He regrets letting his former friend leave him.

C. He doesn’t know whether to apologize to his former friend.

D. He is uncertain whether his former friend can forgive him.

58. The underlined phrase “owned up” in the third paragraph probably means “ ”. A. returned one’s wealth B. admitted one’s mistake C. recovered one’s courage D. controlled one’s feeling 59. Which of the following is what Anne advises Tom to do? A. Tell her that he expects to see her again. B. Express his sincere apology to her. C. Tell her that he is very lonely.

D. Beg her to give him another chance. 60. Anne wants to tell Tom that ________. A. an apology is better late than never

B. he should think twice before he gets angry C. it’s no use crying over spilt milk

D. he should answer for his wrong doings

B

People often say, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” and “Behind every successful man there is a woman.” Both these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their wives rule them.

Most American women like making their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want

more for themselves. They want good jobs, and when they work they want to be paid. They also want to be as successful as men.

The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who didn’t want to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside men and have the same chances for success. They didn’t want to be told that certain jobs or offices were closed to them. They refused to work side by side with men who did the same work for a higher pay.

A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and have confidence in herself. If somebody says to her, “You have come a long way, baby.” She will smile and answer, “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby.” This movement is quite new, and many American women don’t agree with it. But it has already made some important changes in women’s lives and in men’s lives, too. 61. From the first paragraph, we can learn that ________.

A. American women usually take care of their children by themselves B. women in the United States are powerful

C. women play a very important role in men’s lives D. if there is no woman, there is no man

62. From the passage we know that most American women today are _____. A. fighting for their rights to work side by side with men

B. working hard at home to help their husbands and sons be successful C. working side by side with men in all kinds of jobs D. very confident about their future

63. The liberated women want to do all the following EXCEPT ___________. A. stay at home to help their husbands be successful B. have the same chances for success as men

C. get the same pay when doing the same work as men D. seek for office and do some important jobs as men

. By saying “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go”, a liberated woman is stating that _______. A. she has nearly got to her destination B. there is a little more than what she wants C. she will never get to her ideal destination

D. it is not far enough and she will go a lot further

65. In this passage, the author suggests that in the United States _______. A. most women can’t get a good job

B. many women still don’t want to go out of their home to work C. all families are still supported by men D. all liberated women have achieved a lot

C

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated (忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

66. According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG? A. Laughter is good for health.

B. Laughter can make you become old quickly. C. Laughter helps to reduce pain.

D. Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body.

67. The underlined word “diminishes” in the third paragraph means “ ”. A. delays B. prevents C. increases D. reduces 68. Why do doctors hold laughter clinics?

A. Because they want to earn more money.

B. Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses. C. Because they want to improve their patients’ health.

D. Because they want their patients to laugh more. 69. According to the author, we should __________ in our life. A. laugh as much as possible B. watch more funny films

C. smile all the time D. spend time in the laughter clinics 70. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Both laughter and physical exercise are good for health. B. Laughter clinics can help patients improve their condition. C. Laughter can reduce the effect of pain. D. Laughter is the best medicine.

D

Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say, of accommodating a considerable proportion of its population in high-rise blocks of flats. It is said that an Englishman objects to this type of existence, but if this is so, he differs from most inhabitants of the world today.

In the past blocks of flats have been associated with the lower income groups, and many of them lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts, and so on. Some even didn’t have facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish or storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor. Many lacked playgrounds for children on the top of their buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus (对抗) individual houses will continue to rage on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their cases primarily on the assumption (设想) that everyone prefers an individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. They, however, ignore the higher cost of providing full services to a

scattered community and the cost in both money and time commuting to work for the suburban resident.

71. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.

A. unlike most people in other countries, English people dislike living in flats B. people in most countries of the world today like living in the suburbs C. people in Britain are eager to move into high-rise blocks of flats

D. modern flats in Britain fail to provide the necessary facilities for living

72. What can we learn about the blocks of flats built in the past from the passage? A. They were conveniently located.

B. The people who lived there were not rich.

C. They were usually not large enough for big families to live in.

D. The children who lived in them could play on the top of the buildings. 73. Some people don’t like living in flats because ____. A. they must pay much money

B. they prefer to live in a house with a garden

C. there is no central heating and constant hot water supply D. the disposal of rubbish is a problem for people living in flats

74. Some people don’t like living in suburban houses because ____. A. the houses are not large enough

B. people who live in the suburbs must pay much money for the service work

C. people who live in the suburbs have to spend a lot of money and time traveling to work every day

D. it can be difficult for them to do some shopping and to get along well with their neighbors 75. This passage is mainly about __________. A. living in high-rise blocks of flats B. living in the suburbs

C. the difference in living in a flat in Britain and living in a flat in other countries D. the attitude of British people towards living in flats

56. D。细节推断题。根据第一段的首句“I like your column very much.”

根据Anne信中第二段“But you should remember if she thinks you’re apologizing just because you are lonely, she might dismiss your sincerity.”可知Anne认为如果Tom的朋友认为他向她道歉的原因是他很孤独,想见到她来消除自己的孤独,她就不会认为他的道歉是真诚的。因此Anne建议Tom不要提这类的话题,只要真诚地道歉就可以了。 60. A。主旨推断题。根据“She may still be angry with you, and she may have forgotten the friendship between you, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve an apology.”可知Anne想告诉Tom的道理是:对于自己的错误,应该勇于道歉,即使这个道歉做的晚些,也比不做要好。

61. C。从第一段可得出答案。

A The English, as a race, are very different in many ways from all other nationalities, including their closest neighbors, the French, the Belgians and the Dutch. It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons are, it may be fairly stated that the Englishman has developed many attitudes and habits which distinguish him from other nationalities.

Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, reserved person who is fully relaxed only among people he knows well. In the presence of strangers or foreigners he often seems restrained, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a city train any morning or evening to see the truth of this. Serious-looking businessmen and women sit reading their newspapers or having a light sleep in a corner, and no one speaks. In fact, to do so would seem most unusual. An Englishman, pretending to be giving advice to overseas visitors, once suggested, “On entering a railway carriage, shake hands with all the passengers.” Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior which, if broken, makes the person immediately suspected.

In many parts of the world it is quite normal to show openly extremes of enthusiasm, emotion, excitement, etc, often accompanied by appropriate gesture. The Englishman is somewhat different. Of course, an Englishman feels no less deeply than anyone of a different nationality, but he tends to display his feelings far less. This is reflected in his use of language. Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young girl. A more emotional man might describe her state “Oh, she is a goddess”, whereas an Englishman might just say “Oh, she’s all right.” An Englishman who has seen a highly successful and enjoyable film recommends it to a friend by commenting, “It’s not bad you know”, or on seeing some very unusual scenery he might convey (表达) his pleasure by saying, “Nice, yes, very nice.” The overseas visitor must not be

disappointed by this apparent lack of interest and involvement. Instead, he must realize that “all right,” “not bad,” and “nice,” very often have the sense of “first-class,” “excellent,” “beautiful”. This unique style of language use is particularly common in England, and is known as restrained statement.

Down-to-earth means being honest, open, and easy to deal with. It is a pleasure to find someone who is down-to-earth. A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to. He or she accepts others as equals. A down-to-earth person may be an important member of society, of course, but they do not let their importance go to their heads, and they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. Someone who is filled with self-importance and pride, often without cause, is said to have his nose in the air. There is no way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.

Americans use another expression that is similar in some way to down-to-earth. The

expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He has what is called common sense. He may have dreams but he does not allow them to block his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the world. Sometimes such a dreamer can be brought back to reality; sharp words from the teacher, for example, can usually get a daydreaming student to put both feet back on the ground.

The person who is down-to-earth usually has both feet on the ground. But the opposite is not always true. Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down-to-earth. When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, we are realistic and we act honestly and openly toward others, and our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong.

A. is down to the earth B. is easy to deal with C. always thinks he is more important than others D. is confident 62. If a person has both feet on the ground, he ____. A. is in touch with reality, and doesn’t have any dreams

63. From the second paragraph, we know that sharp words from a teacher can usually ________. A. help a student get down to the earth B. wake a student up

C. help a daydreaming student come down to the ground D. help a daydreaming student to become more realistic

. The underlined sentence “But the opposite is not always true.” most probably means that

______.

A. the person who has his nose in the air is not true

B. a man with his head in the clouds is often not intelligent C. the opposite direction is always wrong

D. a person who has both feet on the ground may not be down-to-earth

65. From the passage, we can infer the person who is _______ is the most popular kind of person. A. down-to-earth B. standing on the ground C. with his nose in the air D. with his head in the clouds

C From their beginnings New England towns had a special democratic system of government. At a stated time all the citizens would assemble at a town meeting, where they would discuss local problems and express opinions freely. They also elected the town’s officials at these gatherings and made decisions about the taxes they would pay and about other community matters. These meetings were usually held at the town hall, which was located in the central square.

In the eighteenth-century town meetings, only men who owned property and who were church members actually voted, although everyone present was allowed to express their opinions. Later, all citizens were allowed to vote. Thus the town meeting became truly democratic. Town meetings are still common in New England communities.

In recent years the town meeting idea has been widely imitated. There are open sessions

of this kind on radio and television. Occasionally a meeting of this type is called by a government agency in order to give an opportunity for free and open discussion on current problems and policies.

A. All the citizens. B. All the men except those who were church members. C. The rich. D. The rich men and the church members. 68. Why has the town meeting been widely imitated? A. Because many people are interested in it. B. Because it is very democratic.

C. Because many people enjoy themselves at town meetings. D. Because sometimes government agencies call them.

69. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Citizens can elect the officials in the town meeting.

Most Americans believe that someone isn’t grown-up until the age of 26 and they should complete their education, have a full-time job, have a family to support and be financially independent. They also believe that becoming a real grown-up is a process which begins at about the age of 20 and takes about five years, according to the report from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.

The findings are based on a representative sample of 1,398 people over the age of 18 who were surveyed in person. The survey found that people expect the transitions to grown-up status to be completed at the following ages: age 20.9 self-supporting; age 21.1 no longer living with parents; age 21.2 having a full-time job; age 22.3 education completed; age 24.5 being able to support a family financially; age 25.7 getting married; and age 26.2 having a child.

“There is a large degree of agreement across social groups on the relative importance of the seven transitions,” said Tom Smith, director of the survey. The only obvious pattern of differences is on views about supporting a family, having children and getting married. Older adults consider these more important than younger adults do. This probably shows in large part a change in values across generations away from traditional family values. The most valued step toward reaching adulthood, the survey found, is completing education, followed by full-time employment, supporting a family, financial independence, living independently, and marriage. 71.
