Language study
Integrating skills
Tips

Voyages to the moon are being made every year.It is as easy as to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people of 1980 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of science spots on the moon, many hotels have been built, and the hotels are air-conditioned,naturally.So that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon;every room has at least one picture window.Everything imaginable is}J1.provided for entertainment of the young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven‟t yet started to take on their supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power. They may some day.But many foods now come in pill form and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.
Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a thousand years ago, most of our planet‟s surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water.Crops are no longer destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.
Farming.of course.is very highly developed.Very.few people have to work on the farm.It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.People are now largely vegetarians. You see,as the number of people increased, the number of animals decreased. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier in both our bodies and our minds, and we know the cause and cure of sickness and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more. Such might be our life in 3000 AD.

The work of French scientist Lamarck has done his bit for the theory of evolution(进化).He believed that the environment shaped the development of plant and animal life.He believed that the bodies of plants and animals changed to fit their environment. He thought that a useful physical change would be passed on to the plants or animals‟ offspring(后代).
For example,Lamarck thought that giraffes developed long necks because they had to stretch to reach the leaves of tall trees for food. The earliest group of giraffes stretched their necks a small amount Their-offspring inherited this long neck. The offspring stretched necks a little bit more. They passed this even longer neck on to their own offspring.Over many generations giraffes develop the long necks that they have today.
Not all of Lamarck‟s theory is accepted today. Most scientists do believe that the environment has an effect on the evolution of life form. But they don‟t agree with the theory that a physical change in a plant‟s or animal‟s is passed on to the offspring.Instead, they believe that a change takes place in the plant‟s or animal‟s cells before a change in the offspring can take place. 46.The main purpose of the passage is to discuss__________________. A.the theory of evolution B.the work of Lamarck
C.the evolution of giraffes D.beliefs held by today‟s scientists 47.According to the passage,Lamarck believed that the development of plant‟s and animal‟s life was shaped by the plant‟s or animal‟s________.

48.Who makes sure that the environment has an effect on the evolution of life form.7 A.Lamarck. B.Most scientists. C.The author.D.Both A and B. 49.Which of the following is NOT true about the passage? A.All the scientists don‟t accept Lamarck‟s theory today. B.Not all of the scientists accept Lamarck‟s theory today.
C.Most scientists believe that environment can cause a change in the bodies of plants and animals. D.Most scientists don‟t believe that a physical change in a plant‟s or animal‟s body is passed on to the offspring.
50.With which of the following statements about L~arck‟s work would most scientists today agree?
A.None of his theories about evolution make sense.
B.An animal that changes physically will always pass on the changes to its offspring. C.Giraffes are the only animals that have changed through evolution. D.Environment can cause a change in the bodies of plants and animals.

In the middle of winter, when snow is falling in many pans of the United States, scientists have sounded a warning to people who plan to spend many hours in the sun this summer. The warning:
The sun‟s summertime rays are more dangerous than once thought.
A team of scientists from 80 nations recently reported to the United Nations that a layer of ozone in the atmosphere, which protects humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation, will be thinner over the United States this summer. The thinner layer allows more ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach Earth. The extra amount of ultraviolet radiation could cause an increase in the number of cases of skin cancer.
Scientists first became concerned about the ozone layer in the mid-1980s when a hole was discovered in the layer above Antarctica during the winter. The hole was caused by chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. When these chemicals are sent out into the atmosphere, they produce gases that destroy the ozone.
Concern about the protective ozone layer rose more recently when data from satellites and ground stations showed that ozone levels were dropping over areas other than Antarctica.Low ozone levels were recorded in the spring and summer over the United States and over other populated areas in the world.
Although many countries have already begun stopping the use of ozone—destroying chemicals, the new findings are expected to advance the timetable for a total ban of the chemicals.
