DESCRIPTION

ThePTV05010Wisaready-to-usenonisolatedpowermodule,andpartofanewclassofcompletedc/dcswitchingregulatorsfromTexasInstruments.Theseregulatorscombinehighperformancewithdouble-sided,surface-mountconstruction,togivedesignerstheflexibilitytopowerthemostcomplexmultiprocessordigitalsystemsusingoff-the-shelfcatalogparts.

ThePTV05010Wseriesisproducedina8-pin,singlein-linepin(SIP)package.TheSIPfootprintminimizesboardspace,andoffersanalternatepackageoptionforspaceconsciousapplications.Operatingfroma5-Vinputbus,theseriesprovidesstep-downconversiontoawiderangeofoutputvoltages,atupto8Aofoutputcurrent.Theoutputvoltagecanbesettoanyvalueovertherange,0.8Vto3.6V,usingasingleexternalresistor.

ThisseriesincludesAuto-Track™.Auto-Track™simplifiesthetaskofsupply-voltagesequencinginapowersystembyenablingtheoutputvoltageofmultiplemodulestoaccuratelytrackeachother,oranyexternalvoltage,duringpowerupandpowerdown.

Otheroperatingfeaturesincludeanon/offinhibit,andtheabilitytostartupintoanexistingoutputvoltageorprebias.Anonlatchingovercurrenttripprotectsagainstloadfaults.

Targetapplicationsincludecomplexmultivoltage,multiprocessorsystemsthatincorporatetheindustry'shigh-speedmicroprocessors,busdrivers,andtheTMS320™DSPfamily.

DESCRIPTION

Thepositiveinputvoltagepowernodetothemodule,whichisreferencedtocommonGND.TheregulatedpositivepoweroutputwithrespecttotheGNDnode.

ThisisthecommongroundconnectionfortheVIandVOpowerconnections.Itisalsothe0-Vdcreferenceforthecontrolinputs.Bothpinsmustbeconnectedtocommonground.

TheInhibitpinisanopen-collector/drain,active-lowinputthatisreferencedtoGND.Applyingalow-levelgroundsignaltothisinputdisablesthemodule'soutputandturnsofftheoutputvoltage.WhentheInhibitcontrolisactive,theinputcurrentdrawnbytheregulatorissignificantlyreduced.Iftheinhibitfeatureisnotused,thecontrolpinshouldbeleftopen-circuit.Themodulethenproducesanoutputvoltagewheneveravalidinputsourceisapplied.A1%or0.5%resistormustbeconnecteddirectlybetweenthispinandGND(pin1isrecommended)tosettheoutputvoltageofthemodulehigherthanitslowestvalue.Thetemperaturestabilityoftheresistorshouldbe100ppm/°C(orbetter).Theset-pointrangeis0.8Vto3.6V.Theresistorvaluecanbecalculatedusingaformula.Ifthisinputisleftopen-circuit,theoutputvoltagedefaultstoitslowestvalue.Forfurtherinformation,consulttherelatedapplicationnote.

Thespecificationtablegivesthestandardresistorvaluesforanumberofcommonoutputvoltages.

Thisisananalogcontrolinputthatenablestheoutputvoltagetofollowanexternalvoltage.Thispinbecomesactivetypically20msaftertheinputvoltagehasbeenapplied,andallowsdirectcontroloftheoutputvoltagefrom0Vuptothenominalset-pointvoltage.Withinthisrange,theoutputfollowsthevoltageattheTrackpinonavolt-for-voltbasis.Whenthecontrolvoltageisraisedabovethisrange,themoduleregulatesatitsset-point

voltage.Thefeatureallowstheoutputvoltagetorisesimultaneouslywithothermodulespoweredfromthesameinputbus.Ifunused,thisinputshouldbeconnectedtoVI.

CapacitorRecommendationsforthePTV05010WPowerModule

InputCapacitors

Therequiredinputcapacitorsarea10-µFceramicandaminimumof100-µFelectrolytictype.The100-µFcapacitancemustberatedfor300mArmsripplecurrentcapability.SeeTable1.Theaboveripplecurrentrequirementsareconditionalthatthe10-µFceramiccapacitorispresent.The10-µFX5R/X7Rceramiccapacitorisnecessarytoreduceboththemagnitudeofripplecurrentthroughtheelectroyticcapacitorandtheamountofripplecurrentreflectedbacktotheinputsource.Ceramiccapacitorsshouldbelocatedwithin0.5inch.(1,3cm)ofthemodule'sinputpins.AdditionalceramiccapacitorscanbeaddedtoreducetheRMSripplecurrentrequirementfortheelectrolyticcapacitor.

Ripplecurrent(rms)rating,lessthan150-mΩequivalentseriesresistance(ESR),andtemperaturearethemajorconsiderationswhenselectinginputcapacitors.Unlikepolymer-tantalumcapacitors,regulartantalumcapacitorshavearecommendedminimumvoltageratingof2×(max.dcvoltage+acripple).Thisisstandardpracticetoensurereliability.Onlyafewtantalumcapacitorswerefoundtohavesufficientvoltageratingtomeetthisrequirement.Attemperaturesbelow0°C,theESRofaluminumelectrolyticcapacitorsincreases.Fortheseapplications,Os-Con,polymer-tantalum,andpolymer-aluminumtypesshouldbeconsidered.OutputCapacitor(Optional)

Forapplicationswithloadtransients(suddenchangesinloadcurrent),regulatorresponsebenefitsfromexternaloutputcapacitance.Therecommendedoutputcapacitanceof100µFallowsthemoduletomeetitstransientresponsespecification.Formostapplications,ahigh-qualitycomputer-gradealuminumelectrolyticcapacitorisadequate.Thesecapacitorsprovidedecouplingoverthefrequencyrange,2kHzto150kHz,andaresuitablewhenambienttemperaturesareabove0°C.Foroperationbelow0°C,tantalum-,ceramic-,orOs-Con-typecapacitorsarerecommended.Whenusingoneormorenonceramiccapacitors,thecalculatedequivalentESRshouldbenolowerthan4mΩ(7mΩusingthemanufacturer'smaximumESRforasinglecapacitor).Alistofpreferredlow-ESR-typecapacitorsareidentifiedinTable1.CeramicCapacitors

Above150kHz,theperformanceofaluminumelectrolyticcapacitorsislesseffective.MultilayerceramiccapacitorshavelowESRandaresonantfrequencyhigherthanthebandwidthoftheregulator.Theycanbeusedtoreducethereflectedripplecurrentattheinputaswellasimprovethetransientresponseoftheoutput.Whenusedontheoutput,theircombinedESRisnotcriticalaslongasthetotalvalueofceramiccapacitancedoesnotexceedapproximately300µF.Also,topreventtheformationoflocalresonances,donotplacemorethanfiveidenticalceramiccapacitorsinparallelwithvaluesof10µForgreater.TantalumCapacitors

Tantalum-typecapacitorscanonlybeusedontheoutputbus,andarerecommendedforapplicationswheretheambientoperatingtemperaturecanbelessthan0°C.TheAVXTPS,Sprague593D/594/595andKemetT495/T510capacitorseriesaresuggestedovermanyothertantalumtypesduetotheirhigherratedsurge,powerdissipation,andripplecurrentcapability.Asacaution,manygeneral-purposetantalumcapacitorshaveconsiderablyhigherESR,reducedpowerdissipation,andlowerripplecurrentcapability.Thesecapacitorsarealsolessreliableastheyhavereducedpowerdissipationandsurgecurrentratings.TantalumcapacitorsthathavenostatedESRorsurgecurrentratingarenotrecommendedforpowerapplications.

WhenspecifyingOs-conandpolymertantalumcapacitorsfortheoutput,theminimumESRlimitisencounteredbeforethemaximumcapacitancevalueisreached.

Thetransientresponseofthedc/dcconverterhasbeencharacterizedusingaloadtransientwithadi/dtof1A/µs.Thetypicalvoltagedeviationforthisloadtransientisgiveninthedatasheetspecificationtableusingtheoptionalvalueofoutputcapacitance.Asthedi/dtofatransientisincreased,theresponseofaconverterregulationcircuitultimatelydependsonitsoutputcapacitordecouplingnetwork.Thisisaninherentlimitationwithanydc/dcconverteroncethespeedofthetransientexceedsitsbandwidthcapability.Ifthetargetapplicationspecifiesahigherdi/dtorlowervoltagedeviation,therequirementcanonlybemetwithadditionaloutputcapacitordecoupling.Inthesecases,specialattentionmustbepaidtothetype,value,andESRofthecapacitorsselected.

AdjustingtheOutputVoltage

TheVOAdjustcontrol(pin4)setstheoutputvoltageofthePTV05010Wproducttoavalueovertherange,0.8Vto3.6V.Theadjustmentmethodrequirestheadditionofasingleexternalresistor,RSET,thatmustbeconnecteddirectlybetweentheVOAdjustandtheregulator'soutputGND(pin1isrecommended).Withoutanadjustresistor,theoutputvoltageissettoitslowestvalue.Table2givesthepreferredvalueoftheexternalresistorforanumberofstandardvoltages,alongwiththeactualoutputvoltagethatthisresistancevalueprovides.Figure6showstheplacementoftherequiredresistor.
