Likeanylow-dropoutregulator,theLP2985LVrequiresex-ternalcapacitorsforregulatorstability.Thesecapacitorsmustbecorrectlyselectedforgoodperformance.InputCapacitor

Aninputcapacitorwhosecapacitanceis≥1µFisrequiredbetweentheLP2985LVinputandground(theamountofcapacitancemaybeincreasedwithoutlimit).

Thiscapacitormustbelocatedadistanceofnotmorethan1cmfromtheinputpinandreturnedtoacleananalogground.Anygoodqualityceramic,tantalum,orfilmcapacitormaybeusedattheinput.

Important:Tantalumcapacitorscansuffercatastrophicfail-ureduetosurgecurrentwhenconnectedtoalow-impedancesourceofpower(likeabatteryorverylargecapacitor).IfaTantalumcapacitorisusedattheinput,itmustbeguaranteedbythemanufacturertohaveasurgecurrentratingsufficientfortheapplication.

TherearenorequirementsforESRontheinputcapacitor,buttoleranceandtemperaturecoefficientmustbeconsid-eredwhenselectingthecapacitortoensurethecapacitancewillbe≥1µFovertheentireoperatingtemperaturerange.OutputCapacitor

TheLP2985LVisdesignedspecificallytoworkwithceramicoutputcapacitors,utilizingcircuitrywhichallowstheregula-tortobestableacrosstheentirerangeofoutputcurrentwithanoutputcapacitorwhoseESRisaslowas5mΩ.ItmayalsobepossibletouseTantalumorfilmcapacitorsattheoutput,butthesearenotasattractiveforreasonsofsizeandcost(seenextsectionCapacitorCharacteristics).

Theoutputcapacitormustmeettherequirementformini-mumamountofcapacitanceandalsohaveanESR(equiva-lentseriesresistance)valuewhichiswithinthestablerange.CurvesareprovidedwhichshowthestableESRrangeasafunctionofloadcurrent(seeESRgraphsFigure1andFigure2).

Itisimportanttorememberthatcapacitortoleranceandvariationwithtemperaturemustbetakenintoconsiderationwhenselectinganoutputcapacitorsothattheminimumrequiredamountofoutputcapacitanceisprovidedoverthefulloperatingtemperaturerange.Itshouldbenotedthatceramiccapacitorscanexhibitlargechangesincapacitancewithtemperature(seenextsection,CapacitorCharacteris-tics).

Theoutputcapacitormustbelocatednotmorethan1cmfromtheoutputpinandreturnedtoacleananalogground.NoiseBypassCapacitor

Connectinga10nFcapacitortotheBypasspinsignificantlyreducesnoiseontheregulatoroutput.Itshouldbenotedthatthecapacitorisconnecteddirectlytoahigh-impedancecir-cuitinthebandgapreference.

Becausethiscircuithasonlyafewmicroamperesflowinginit,anysignificantloadingonthisnodewillcauseachangeintheregulatedoutputvoltage.Forthisreason,DCleakagecurrentthroughthenoisebypasscapacitormustneverex-ceed100nA,andshouldbekeptaslowaspossibleforbestoutputvoltageaccuracy.

Thetypesofcapacitorsbestsuitedforthenoisebypasscapacitorareceramicandfilm.High-qualityceramiccapaci-torswitheitherNPOorCOGdielectrictypicallyhaveverylowleakage.10nFpolypropoleneandpolycarbonatefilmcapacitorsareavailableinsmallsurface-mountpackagesandtypicallyhaveextremelylowleakagecurrent.

CAPACITORCHARACTERISTICS

TheLP2985LVwasdesignedtoworkwithceramiccapaci-torsontheoutputtotakeadvantageofthebenefitstheyoffer:forcapacitancevaluesinthe2.2µFto4.7µFrange,ceramicsaretheleastexpensiveandalsohavethelowestESRvalues(whichmakesthembestforeliminatinghigh-frequencynoise).TheESRofatypical2.2µFceramiccapacitorisintherangeof10mΩto20mΩ,whicheasilymeetstheESRlimitsrequiredforstabilitybytheLP2985LV.

Onedisadvantageofceramiccapacitorsisthattheircapaci-tancecanvarywithtemperature.Mostlargevalueceramiccapacitors(≥2.2µF)aremanufacturedwiththeZ5UorY5Vtemperaturecharacteristic,whichresultsinthecapacitancedroppingbymorethan50%asthetemperaturegoesfrom25˚Cto85˚C.

Thiscouldcauseproblemsifa2.2µFcapacitorwereusedontheoutputsinceitwilldropdowntoapproximately1µFathighambienttemperatures(whichcouldcausetheLP2985LVtooscillate).IfZ5UorY5Vcapacitorsareusedontheoutput,aminimumcapacitancevalueof4.7µFmustbeobserved.

Abetterchoicefortemperaturecoefficientinceramiccapaci-torsisX7R,whichholdsthecapacitancewithin±15%.Un-fortunately,thelargervaluesofcapacitancearenotofferedbyallmanufacturersintheX7Rdielectric.

Tantalum

Tantalumcapacitorsarelessdesirablethanceramicsforuseasoutputcapacitorsbecausetheyaremoreexpensivewhencomparingequivalentcapacitanceandvoltageratingsinthe1µFto4.7µFrange.

AnotherimportantconsiderationisthatTantalumcapacitorshavehigherESRvaluesthanequivalentsizeceramics.ThismeansthatwhileitmaybepossibletofindaTantalumcapacitorwithanESRvaluewithinthestablerange,itwouldhavetobelargerincapacitance(whichmeansbiggerandmorecostly)thanaceramiccapacitorwiththesameESRvalue.

ItshouldalsobenotedthattheESRofatypicalTantalumwillincreaseabout2:1asthetemperaturegoesfrom25˚Cdownto−40˚C,sosomeguardbandmustbeallowed.

On/offInputOperation

TheLP2985LVisshutoffbydrivingtheON/OFFinputlow,andturnedonbypullingithigh.Ifthisfeatureisnottobeused,theON/OFFinputshouldbetiedtoVINtokeeptheregulatoroutputonatalltimes.

Toassureproperoperation,thesignalsourceusedtodrivetheON/OFFinputmustbeabletoswingaboveandbelowthespecifiedturn-on/turn-offvoltagethresholdslistedintheElectricalCharacteristicssectionunderVON/OFF.Topreventmis-operation,theturn-on(andturn-off)voltagesignalsap-pliedtotheON/OFFinputmusthaveaslewratewhichis≥40mV/µs.

Caution:theregulatoroutputvoltagecannotbeguaranteedifaslow-movingAC(orDC)signalisappliedthatisintherangebetweenthespecifiedturn-onandturn-offvoltageslistedundertheelectricalspecificationVON/OFF(seeElectri-calCharacteristics).

REVERSEINPUT-OUTPUTVOLTAGE

ThePNPpowertransistorusedasthepasselementintheLP2985LVhasaninherentdiodeconnectedbetweentheregulatoroutputandinput.Duringnormaloperation(wheretheinputvoltageishigherthantheoutput)thisdiodeisreverse-biased.

However,iftheoutputispulledabovetheinput,thisdiodewillturnONandcurrentwillflowintotheregulatoroutput.Insuchcases,aparasiticSCRcanlatchwhichwillallowahighcurrenttoflowintoVIN(andoutthegroundpin),whichcandamagethepart.

Inanyapplicationwheretheoutputmaybepulledabovetheinput,anexternalSchottkydiodemustbeconnectedfromVINtoVOUT(cathodeonVIN,anodeonVOUT),tolimitthereversevoltageacrosstheLP2985LVto0.3V(seeAbsoluteMaximumRatings).

MICROSMDMOUNTING

ThemicroSMDpackagerequiresspecificmountingtech-niqueswhicharedetailedinNationalSemiconductorAppli-cationNote#1112.ReferringtothesectionSurfaceMountTechnology(SMT)AssemblyConsiderations,itshouldbenotedthatthepadstylewhichmustbeusedwiththe5-pinpackageistheNSMD(non-soldermaskdefined)type.

Forbestresultsduringassembly,alignmentordinalsonthePCboardmaybeusedtofacilitateplacementofthemicroSMDdevice.

MICROSMDLIGHTSENSITIVITY

ExposingthemicroSMDdevicetodirectsunlightwillcausemisoperationofthedevice.LightsourcessuchasHalogenlampscanalsoaffectelectricalperformanceifbroughtneartothedevice.

Thewavelenghtswhichhavethemostdetrimentaleffectareredsandinfra-reds,whichmeansthatthefluorescentlight-ingusedinsidemostbuildingshasverylittleeffectonper-formance.AmicroSMDtestboardwasbroughttowithin1cmofafluorescentdesklampandtheeffectontheregu-latedoutputvoltagewasnegligible,showingadeviationoflessthan0.1%fromnominal.
